Abstract

The presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria has led to an increase in infections, healthcare costs and deaths throughout the world [1]. [...]it is critical to develop efficient alternatives to kill pathogens. Photodynamic inactivation of microbes (PDI) is a non-antibiotic alternative treatment that uses light, a photosensitizer (PS), and molecular oxygen to create reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide and hydroxyl radicals [2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]. For several decades, porphyrin derivatives with positive charges on the porphyrin macrocycle have been used to increase the photosensitivity of Gram-negative bacteria by improving the interaction between the PS and the bacterial cell membrane through electrostatic interactions [4,7,13,14,15,16,17]. In this work, we studied the PDI and the interaction of four cationic meso-substituted porphyrin derivatives with Gram-negative bacteria using Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model organism (Figure 1).
