Abstract

Alternate abstract:

The aim of this study was to identify the different motivational profiles shown by a sample of 699 students of Physical Education compared with the importance they granted to this subject. For that aim, they were administered instruments measuring sport motivation, motivational climate, psychological mediators and the importance granted to physical education. A cluster analysis yielded three profiles: The first profile was named "self-determined profile" because students showed a high self-determined motivation; the second profile was named "non self-determined profile" as students showed low levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; finally, the third profile was coined "moderate motivation profile” because subjects showed intermediate intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and high demotivation. Students with self-determined profile were at the same time those who granted higher importance to physical education.
