Abstract
Bortolottoa discusses the study on Leptodelphax maculigera, a species of leafhopper, which was recorded in Central-West Brazil, marking its first occurrence in the American continent. This species has an oligophagous feeding habit and is associated with feeding on economically important host plants such as grasses, sugarcane, and maize. Additionally, some species from the genus Leptodelphax have been reported as potential vectors of phytoplasma. In this study, the presence of Maize rayado fino virus (MRFV) was detected in L. maculigera adults, indicating their ability to transmit the pathogen. Furthermore, this study reports the occurrence of L. maculigera in Southern Brazil for the first time. Specimens of this leafhopper were collected in maize fields using active searching and yellow sticky traps. The study highlights the importance of additional research on potential disease transmission and the need for crop monitoring to implement effective pest management measures.
