Abstract

[LANGUAGE= "English"] Atrial fibrillation has frequently been associated with mitral valve disease, particularly mitral valve stenosis. Mitral valve stenosis and atrial fibrillation are well known risk factors for left atrial thrombus and they increase the risk of stroke and thromboembolism 18-fold. Thrombus in the left atrium may cause fatal systemic emboli or sudden death due to occlusion of mitral valve orifice. For this reason, early diagnosis and treatment are very important in such cases. In this case report, we present a 69 year-old woman who had atrial fibrillation and a severe mitral valve stenosis with a huge thrombus in the left atrium.
