Abstract

A mechanical assessment was conducted to characterise the near β titanium alloy Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al (Ti 10-2-3), which was heat-treated to provide two strength variants. Low cycle fatigue and crack propagation tests were performed under standard laboratory air plus a salt fog environment. The differences in static strength were also demonstrated under fatigue conditions utilising plain specimens. However, the alloy was essentially insensitive to the test environment when comparing LCF performance in air and salt fog. Salt fog also provided no effect on crack growth behaviour. A double edge notch specimen geometry was employed to measure free initiation and the growth of cracks from a stress-raising feature. The current data now supplement previous studies aimed at expanding the mechanical database for Ti 10-2-3 component design and in-service life predictions.
