We think that this approach will be beneficial to all our stakeholders. Reviewers, especially those who are new to the process, will have a clear indication of what characteristics of the manuscript they ought to focus on. Editors will have uniform and clearer information from which to make decisions. Authors, in turn, will have in the reviews an unambiguous indication of which items need either more experimental work or better writing.
We are by no means pioneers in this effort: other journals have already adopted this approach, with excellent success (e.g., https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-01101-9 and https://peerj.com/articles/17514/).
