Julio Álvarez del Vayo: destejiendo la leyenda negra de un perdedor

Abstract

La figura del político socialista Julio Álvarez del Vayo y Olloqui ha estado desde siempre rodeada de polémica. A lo largo de este artículo se mostrará cómo se fue tejiendo esa leyenda de descrédito que le persiguió durante toda su vida, incluso después de muerto, y que tuvo como sello distintivo la deslealtad tras ser acusado de ser un agente soviético, norteamericano…o ambos, un comunista encubierto o un traidor a Largo Caballero y al PSOE. Asimismo se intentará aclarar hasta qué punto su mala reputación fue consecuencia de su dualidad ideológica más que de los hilos de la traición.

The figure of the socialist politician Julio Álvarez del Vayo y Olloqui has been always surrounded by controversy. Throughout this article it will be shown how a reputation for dishonesty was woven into the fabric of his life that followed him even after death. He bore this stain of disloyalty after accusations of having been a Soviet or North American agent, an undercover communist or a traitor to Largo Caballero and to the Spanish Socialist Party. We will also try to clarify to what degree this reputation was the consequence of his ideological duality rather than evidence of actual betrayal.
