Abstract

Linguistic analysis tools such as corpora and concordancers (and the study of concordances derived from them) now enable us to take a different and, in some ways, more objective look at linguistic data and, in this particular case, at the discourse expressed on the subject of intercomprehension, especially the opinions of trainees during several intercomprehension training sessions. The systematic collection of participants' responses during the last training sessions (on the Miriadi platform and in the last year on the Moodle platform) enabled us to build up a small multilingual corpus, which helped us conduct a discourse analysis on intercomprehension by means of concordances. In the final phase of the session, participants were asked to answer four questions about what they liked best, what they liked least, what they had learned and what they would like to change. The analysis of these data by the concordancers, through the study of certain key words and their frequency, enables us to better understand the advantages but also the problems linked to this type of collaborative and plurilingual distance learning and to better calibrate the activities, timing and modalities of future session. A corpus analysis of the comments made by participants in IC training sessions, and in particular the comments they posted as an evaluation of the experience, showed that participants are well aware that this type of training offers a new way of learning languages, which is obvious to the organisers, but which may be considered too difficult, or even impossible, for the participants. However, a study of the occurrences and frequencies of the words in the corpus shows very clearly that this type of approach helps to develop a modus agendi, a different way of acting, by contributing to the acquisition of cross-cutting skills linked to working together, making joint decisions, accepting compromises, accomplishing multiple tasks, respecting the time of other participants, learning about the history and culture of other countries, respecting different points of view, time management and patience. In the end, the participants' comments encourage us to transform intercomprehension into a daily practice that is not only functional for the student's training, but also forms part of the skills acquired for use in private and professional life.
