Abstract

A significant proportion of patients sustaining moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) have chronic physical, neurocognitive, and emotional/behavioural symptoms. Similar symptoms may initially be present in persons with mild TBI, but tend to recede within a few weeks or months. A subgroup may, however, experience persisting complaints. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment is necessary before making a detailed functional diagnosis or designing individually tailored interventions. Cognitive rehabilitation programs and interventions targeted at specific cognitive domains are increasingly used to promote maximal neurocognitive functioning after TBI. Literature reviews indicate that certain types of cognitive rehabilitation can be recommended in the post-acute stage. A brief summary of the evidence concerning rehabilitation of impaired attention, memory and executive function is presented.
