Abstract

Client characteristics and treatment outcome associated with young drug abusers in Norway: A prospective study

This article describes a recent study of 100 clients from three policlinics for young adult drug abusers in Oslo. The study poses three important questions: What type of client applies for help? What changes take place during treatment? How many clients complete treatment? The mean age of subjects taking part in the study was 27. Most subjects were addicted to cannabis. 35 % were women. The study found that the level of drug abuse, family problems, and the number of criminal acts committed during treatment decreased significantly, particularly for subjects below the age of 26. Furthermore, subjects’ physical and psychological health improved significantly. Thirty-eight percent of the subject population completed treatment. Subjects with a chronic heroin addiction problem, and/or with a personality disorder seemed less likely to complete treatment. The study confirms that policlinics for drug abusers in fact provide effective help to young adults with a limited drug abuse career.
