Abstract
Plasma Arc Melting Cold Hearth Remelting (PAMCHR) is an effective recycling and refining process that makes it possible to recycle solid scraps and turnings for aeronautical applications. This study details the thermal modelling of the melting of raw materials in the melting crucible as well as a complete 3D numerical simulation of the thermo-hydrodynamic behaviour of the metal flow in the PAMCHR furnace, based on the CFD software Ansys-Fluent. Simulation results are presented for a pilot furnace. A comparison between calculated and measured pool profiles shows a satisfactory agreement. As the main objective of the PAMCHR process is to remove inclusions from the input material, a Lagrangian calculation of particle trajectories in the liquid metal pool is also performed. The effects of critical parameters such as particle size and density on particle residence time and on elimination of high-density inclusions (HDI) by trapping are evaluated.
