The Council on Foreign Relations was founded in 1921 as an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan think tank dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas to foreign policy practitioners, including Council members, senior government officials, prominent journalists, and members of Congress and tiieir staffs. Two years ago, the Council launched its Academic Outreach Program, designed to connect the academic community to die Council's research and analysis. The program consists of die following components.
The Academic Conference Call Series enables students and professors around the country to participate in interactive discussions with Council fellows and Foreign Affairs authors. Background readings are distributed prior to each discussion. Typically, 10 to 15 universities join each, represented by groups ranging from a few students meeting in a professor's office to entire classes.
Webcasts of Council meetings give the public access to live events in New York featuring prominent policymakers and scholars. Webcasts may be viewed live from any computer via the Council's web site, CFR.org . Video, audio, and transcripts of these meetings and many others are archived on the site. These files can be downloaded to iPods/MP3 players through RSS feeds and podcasts that may be accessed through CFR.org , the iTunes Music Store, and Yahoo! Fulllength videos are also available on Princeton's University Channel and on ForaTV.
