Advice for the non-Native researcher
In our on-going discussion about tribal research and scholarship, Native people frequently consider the role of non-Native researchers and research institutions. We recognize that the nature of research in contemporary society means that there will continue to be non-Native researchers and non-Native research institutions who will participate in and conduct research in our communities. In the spirit of building allies, we offer suggestions to the nonNative researcher and research institution who come to work in our communities.
Our communities are capable of defining our own needs and expectations. Researchers must be keenly aware of this capability and should foster community participation in decisions about research. When a researcher wants to do research in the tribal community,...
