During the 2008 American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim California, many librarians gathered to hear the discussion lead by Henry Louis Gates Jr and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham about their latest scholarly reference work, The African American National Biography (AANB ). Gates and Higginbotham discussed in detail why this project was significant to the discipline of African American Studies and American history. The African American National Biography was born out of Oxford University Press's partnership with the American Council of Learned Societies.
