Abstract

Suicide is the S,h leading cause of death for all Kansans statewide (Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. The toll that suicide takes on society can he overwhelming both emotionally and economically. The cost of suicide and self-injury to the American government in 2015 has been estimated to be $69 billion (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2019). To compound this issue, suicide has been a growing area of concern in this country. A recent report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found thaitsuicide rates have increased in the United States by 30% between 1999 and 2016 (Stone et al 2018). A limitation of this study is the sample size. Considering that the sample size of females was limited, it was not possible to compare age-adjusted suicide rates for males compared to females. Crude death rates were able to be evaluated, which did reveal important results about how suicide is impacting the state of Kansas and its residents.
