The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) was established in 1960 between those European states who had been recruited for, but had rejected, membership in the European Community (EC). The EFTA included Austria, Finland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. The members of EFTA created a free trade zone limited in its scope and its institutional framework. However, the relationship between the members of the EC and EFTA became closer over time. Finally, the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA Agreement or Agreement) was signed in Oporto, Portugal, on May 2, 1992, between the EC, its twelve Member States, and the seven states of the EFTA. The Agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 1994, represented a new chapter in the process of European integration.
