Dr. William James Almon was bom in Newport, Rhode Island about 1755, the son of James and Ruth (Hollywood) Almon. In 1771 he apprenticed to Andrew Anderson, a New York city physician and surgeon, for five years, seven and one half months. Upon the completion of his apprenticeship he was awarded his M. D. by St. Andrews University, Scotland, in 1792. Dr. Almo« served with the Royal ArtLlery during the American Revolution, coming to Halifax at the close of ths war in 1783- There he served as surgeon to the Ordnance and Artillery from 1784 to 1816, as well as surgeon general to the Nova Scotia Militia. In April 1785 Dr. Almon was appointed visiting surgeon at the poor house. He m. 4 August 1785 Rebecca "Becky" Byles, daughter of Rev, Mather Byles and his first wife, Rebecca Walter. At i. meeting of the Cornissioners of the Poor on 1 October 1816, it was noted that Dr. Almon had left Nova Scotia for Great Britain due to ill health and his son, Dr. William Bruce ,Almon, would fill in for hiir. Dr. Almon d. 5 February 1817 in Bath, England, bur. in St. James Church in that city. Rebecca d. 5 June 1853 aged ninety years, bur. St. Johns cemetery, Halifax.

Mather Byles Almon b. in Halifax, bpt. 24 June 1796, m. 31 January 1825J82 to Sophia, daughter of John and Sarah (Stevens) Pryor, Mather helped found and became president of the Bank of Nova Scotia, a position he held irom 1837 to 1870.a0 He was appointed to the Executive and Legislative Counc.ls in 1843 and supported Conservative parry policies until his break with Charles Tupper (later Sir Charles) in 1864 over the issue of Confederation.
