On October 16, 1987, Alusingen celebrated its 75th anniversary, and less than two years later, on May 26, 1989 Schweizerische Aluminium AG - better known as Alusuisse - celebrated its 100th birthday.
Following the formation of the German Reich in 1871, Alusingen was set up in 1912 as a means of avoiding the customs tariffs that had been introduced, the initial capital coming from Swiss investors who set up the plant at Singen am Hohentwiel, initially as a foil-producing factory. If one likes to look at it that way, this step, more than three quarters of a century ago, can be regarded as an early and farsighted move on the part of those Swiss investors in the direction of a European market. Within the triangle, Switzerland - Germany - Austria, many such foundations were established by Swiss companies around the turn of the century.
