A 57-year-old woman, who was receiving amisulpride and venlafaxine, developed catatonia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and temporal lobe epilepsy after venlafaxine withdrawal.
The woman, who was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder depressive type, received amisulpride 200mg twice daily and venlafaxine XL 150mg once daily for 8 years from the age of 48 years. Because she was well, her general practitioner then discontinued venlafaxine and continued amisulpride. After 1 year in March 2007, she was admitted with an acute catatonic state typified by her becoming immobile for up to 6 hours.
