Although anastomosing river systems have been the subject of considerable interest, controversy still remains with respect to the factors controlling the evolution of this type of river system. Makaske's approach to establishing why anastomosis occurs is based upon detailed geomorphological and lithological investigations of diverse river systems. The results emerging provide convincing evidence to support the notion that anastomosis is controlled by a number of 'local' and 'universal' factors.
