AORN Surgical Conference & Expo 2014 Speaker Interviews

Several of the distinguished speakers from the 2014 schedule have graciously agreed to participate in interviews about their upcoming sessions to provide a sample of the extensive educational offerings from which attendees will be able to choose in Chicago, Illinois, this March. The rst interviews were published in the January issue of the Journal, pages 27e35.
An innovative approach to educating the novice perioperative nursedMargaret (Peggy) Camp, MSN
Health care organizations continue to face the challenge of educating newly hired perioperative nurses. During the session An Innovative Approach to Educating the Novice Perioperative Nurse, Peggy Camp will present on how a pilot perioperative training program met this challenge through innovation and collaboration. Camp, who is an independent health care consultant specializing in supply chain and peri-operative nursing, will share lessons learned asa result of the pilot and recommendations for future programs.
AORN Journal: How did you become interested in the issue you will be presenting at the AORN Surgical Conference & Expo 2014?
Camp: Last year, I had the opportunity to leada six-month Periop 101TM pilot program for the HealthOne system, Denver, Colorado. Unique to this pilot program was that it was open to both experienced nurses and new nurse graduates and
also that several hospitals were involved. The new graduates were required to have a bachelor of science in nursing, and the experienced nurses were required to have at least three years of nursing experience. A total of 22 nurses, of whom 16 were new graduates and six were experienced nurses, completed the program. Twenty-one of those nurses are still gainfully employed at HealthOne inpatient ORs. I want to share my experience, as well as the experiences of my students, with attendees. Two of those students will copresent with me.
AORN Journal: Why would you recommend that conference attendees come to your session?
Camp: I recommend this session so attendees can learn that it is possible to provide perioperative training in a number of different ways.
