Applied multiple regression/correlation analysis for the behavioral sciences. By Jacob Cohen, Patricia Cohen, Stephen G. West & Leona S. Aiken. Mahwah, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2003. (3rd edition). Cased L50.95. ISBN: 0-8058-2223-2.
The first edition of this book was published in 1975 and the second in 1983. Both editions, particularly the second, were extremely popular, if not classic, texts in the field. The Cohens began work on the 3rd edition in the 1990s with Stephen West and Leona Aiken (authors of Multiple Regression: Testing and interpreting interactions. Sage), but, sadly, Jacob Cohen died in 1998 and although plans and work were well progressed, the difficult task of completing this book fell to the three remaining authors. Therefore, I am very pleased to report that the 3rd edition is both an excellent tribute to the memory of Jacob Cohen and an invaluable resource for researchers employing multiple regression (MR) per se, or as the general data analytic system advocated by Cohen and Cohen (e.g. 1975, 1983).
As with earlier editions, this book is intended as a handbook for researchers in the behavioural sciences, as well as a text for similar postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students. Consequently, the book is pitched at a sophisticated level, but this is achieved in an accessible style, employing a data analytic rather than mathematical approach. The 3rd edition comes with a CD, usefully providing data and syntax to illustrate SAS, SPSS or SYSTAT versions...
