Hoerth, in this work geared towards students beginning their OT studies, aims to demonstrate how archaeological finds contribute to a fuller understanding of the cultural and historical setting of the Bible and the biblical text.
The contents are divided into twenty chapters. Chap. I is an explanation of the purpose, scope, and methodologies of archaeology and their relationship to the Bible. In the remaining chapters H. surveys sequential episodes of the OT story, from Abraham through the exile and return, and concludes with an examination of the intertestamental period. In each of these chapters he incorporates pertinent archaeological materials, indicates their significance for biblical understanding, and includes a list of suggested readings.
