Abstract
Part 1 of this article presented a provisional set of metadata elements for the implementation of ISO 15489-1 Information and Documentation - Records Management. In Part 2 the elements are mapped to the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) to establish the extent to which the two standards are compatible and the degree to which ISO 15489-1 metadata can be transferred directly from a current records management system to an archival description system. The mapping reveals a large degree of correlation between the metadata that should be captured as part of a records management system to satisfy ISO 15489-1, and the information required to compile an ISAD(G)-compliant archival description. Most of the compatible information comes from the description area of ISO 15489-1 metadata elements rather than the management area. Out of the six mandatory elements for ISAD(G) interoperability, five, i.e. reference code, title, dates, extent, and creator, are present in the ISO 15489-1 metadata element set, albeit often in an abbreviated form.
Introduction
Part 1 of this article presented a provisional metadata set for the implementation of ISO 15489-1:2001 (International Standards Organization, 2001). In Part 2 the authors map the 23 elements to the 26 required by the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) (International Council on Archives, 2000) and comment on the extent to which the records management metadata can be reused for archival description.
Two metadata element maps were prepared. The first, given in the Appendix, Table AI, shows the ISO 15489-1 metadata set and maps ISAD(G) on to it. The second map is arranged by ISAD (G) element reference and maps the ISO 15489-1 elements across (see Appendix, Table AII).
The mappings reveal varying degrees of correlation between the requirements of the two standards. These are discussed in the three categories set out below:
(1) Direct mapping: where the ISAD(G) element has a corresponding elements) in ISO 15489-1, the information from which can be transferred from the records management system to the archival description of the record. In some cases the data need modification before reuse.
(2) Incomplete mapping: where the ISAD(G) element requires information from an ISO 15489-1 element(s), but is only partially fulfilled by it or requires similar but...
