Tarawa, a battleground once more, lies
wizened in its salt; it cannot fight a global thaw.
Vegetation, coconuts, are gone; what's left is
harshest barren, rock invaded by the cobalt sea.
Kirabas, the archipelago of islands, atolls, shrinks,
the loam and sands retreat, the yawning houses
tilt, the infrastructure goes, the streets, the earth
