TOPIC. Concept analysis of authenticity.
PURPOSE. This paper aims to analyze the concept of authenticity and propose a definition of authenticity that can be used to enhance the nurse-client relationship.
SOURCES. Published research.
CONCLUSIONS. Authenticity is a life-long process of self-discovery that includes realizing personal potential and acting on that potential. A part of this process is accepting the responsibility for and the consequences of life choices that are consciously or unconsciously made. This is sometimes achieved through suffering. This process culminates in a demonstration of congruency in ideals, values, and actions in relation to self and others.

Introduction
Obtaining clear understanding of concepts by examining their structures and functions is the purpose of concept analysis. Definitions and uses of concepts can be divergent and at times vague. Individuals perceive concepts based on their personal experiences and understanding, which at times can lead to misuse and misunderstanding. Through the process of concept analysis we can clarify and better understand concepts which, in turn, provide the foundation for clear theory development. Paley (1996) proposed three reasons why concept analysis was important. First, concepts form the basis for theory development. second, through concept analysis, concepts are operanonalized. This important step allows researchers to correctly exemplify the concept in theory and/or instrument development. Third, nursing practice is improved as the concept is clarified.
Several methods of concept analysis have been proposed with benefits and drawbacks of each one identified by Hupcey and Penrod (2005). Even though some weaknesses have been identified (Paley, 1996), the Walker and Avant (2005) eight-step method was chosen for this analysis of the concept of authenticity. This is a very straightforward method that is easy to understand and apply. The eight steps in this method will be delineated as follows:
1. Select a concept
2. Determine the aims or purposes of analysis
3. Identify all uses of the concept that can be discovered
4. Determine the defining attributes
5. Identify a model case
6. Identify borderline, related, contrary, invented, and illegitimate cases
7. Identify antecedents and consequences
8. Define empirical referents (Walker & Avant, 2005)
