The Ragazzi Awards for Excellence in Books were presented at the 2002 Bologna Children's Book Fair. In the fiction category the winners were: Silent Night by Sandy Turner (New York: Simon and Schuster), and El Senor Korbes y otros Cuentos de Grimm illustrated by Oliveiro Dumas (Mr. Korbes and other stories by Grimm; Valencia: Media Vaca). Citations for excellence in fiction were presented to: Dictionnaire Le Petit Rebelle by Claudine Desmarteau (Little rebel dictionary; Paris: Seuil Jeunesse) and Histoires Naturelles by Jules Renard and illustrated by Yassen Grigorov (Natural stories; Geneva: La Joie de Lire). The winner in the nonfiction category is Una Temporada en Calcuta by Lluisot (Vacation in Calcutta; Valencia: Media Vaca) and the recipient of the New Horizons Award is Agmal Al-Hekayat Al-Shaabeya by Yaacoub El-Sharouny and illustrated by Helmy El-- Touni (Most beautiful folktales; Cairo: Dar EI-Shorouk).
