Edward N. Treverton, an antiquarian book dealer based in Asheville, North Carolina, has a geology degree from the University of Tennessee. He has collected Traven for more than 20 years and claims in his bibliography to have solved a literary mystery. In his preface Treverton writes that the identity of "B. Traven - actor, anarchist, German revolutionary, American exile in Mexico, and author of 16 books with millions of readers is perhaps the greatest literary mystery of the century". Little is known about Traven. He died in 1969: through his novels he became "an American countercultural hero".
Treverton's bibliography is divided into two sections with four appendices followed by plates from the covers or dust wrappers of Traven's works. Part I, "Biography" contains Treverton's "Biographical speculations". Treverton, using documentation, clears up some of the mysteries of his subject's early life, although even "with access to both the Traven archives in Mexico and the Marut archives at the University of California at Riverside, nothing is known about his childhood, his parents, or even the name he was born with".
