Bent Einer Juel-Jensen was born in Odense, Denmark. After qualifying in medicine in 1949 in Copenhagen, he moved to Oxford, where he spent the rest of his life. At New College he studied physiology and Elizabethan literature, encouraged by R S Creed, Lord David Cecil, and John Buxton.
