A 17-year-old girl developed various toxicities which included drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, cardiac arrest, generalised convulsions, pneumothorax, hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia and mild short term memory loss following benzonatate overdose.
The girl had a history of depression. She presented to the emergency department (ED) with cardiac arrest. She had swallowed 12 tablets of benzonatate [dosage not stated] which was a cough medicine prescribed by her doctor. She appeared drowsy and complained of nausea and dizziness. While taking her to the ED, almost 30 minutes post drug ingestion, she experienced generalised convulsions and then became apneic. Initially, she was unresponsive and pulse less.
