The use of activated charcoal (medicinal coal, Carbo medicinalis) in food is a common dietary trend: activated carbon gives the food a black color and is said to serve to "detox" or "purify". It is used e.g. in recipes for smoothies, ice cream and pizza. But care should be taken with this trend, according to the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH (AGES).
