Watch out - mystery shoppers are about, and they are out there waiting to catch you out, warns Jane Bates
Was he genuine or was I being put to the test? Every time a particular patient comes to mind, I begin to wonder. He was a fit young man with a common and easily dealt with problem, but his agitation about the condition could only be described as totally over the top.
He needed information as though he had just arrived from Planet Zog and had never before encountered human ailments. He required reassurance as though he was in the grip of some unusual and life-threatening disease.
'Warts are very common,' I explained. 'I've got one on my finger, too.' After his treatment he phoned the department twice to keep me up to speed with the progress of his tiny lesion - and I tried my best to sound sympathetic. All the while, however, suspicion was festering in my brain.
