The Colon Classification was first conceived by Professor S.R. Ranganathan in 1924. The implementation of the scheme was experimented on in Madras University Library, India, for about eight years before the publication of its first edition in 1933. The Colon Classification has revolutionized classification systems by going beyond a simple shelving device for libraries, to tools for information analysis, organization and retrieval. This scheme is known to be a faceted classification scheme with analytico-synthetic methods to represent the subject content of publications. Colon Classification has exerted a great influence on other contemporary classification schemes like DDC and UDC in their modifications and revisions.
