The literature of lighting design is quite extensive, and this bibliography is selective. Works chosen include resources on the history of lighting design, the theory of lighting design, the practice of lighting design, biography and autobiography of lighting designers, and reference materials including glossaries of technical terms. The selection of these materials is based on their importance in the field and the stature of their authors. Additionally, consideration has been given to selections for which there are multiple library holdings, making access more easily available to researchers. Some authors have been very prolific, and many editions of their works have been published. For example, Stanley McCandless's A Syllabus of Stage Lighting (first produced from a typewritten copy by Whitlock's bookstore in New Haven, Connecticut, as A Syllabus of the Course in Stage Lighting in 1927) was published numerous times from 1931 to 1964. This bibliography does not attempt to provide a publication history, but rather includes the most recent editions and printings of works. In certain cases, it may not be immediately apparent from the title why a publication has been included (for example, William Forsythe includes an interview with lighting designer Jennifer Tipton). Works selected for the bibliography are limited to English language publications, although researchers will find other non-English resources, both ancient and modern, of value. For example, Angelo Ingegneri's Delia poesia rappresentativa & del modo di rappresentare le favole sceniche: discorso (Ferrara: Vittorio Baldini, 1598) is held in print or on microform by a fair number of libraries.
Professional organizations play an important part in the literature of the field, including the development and publication of technical and educational standards. The United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) regularly publish books, reports, guidelines, standards, and other technical works that are important in the literature of lighting design. In addition, their websites and web resources that they provide are quite useful. The inclusion of specific materials from these organizations has been limited because of the ongoing nature of their publication programs; nevertheless, researchers should be aware of the organizations and investigate their publications on lighting design.
There are a number of periodicals that publish, either regularly or occasionally, on lighting design and designers,...
