Among different emerging frontier technologies for agricultural development, biotechnology (biotech crops) seems to be one of the fastest adopted crop technology in the history of modern agriculture with a 94-fold increase in hectarage from 1 .7 million hectares in 1996 to 160 million hectares in 2011. A historical decade of cultivation of Bt cotton has transformed the cotton production in India. An increase from 50,000 hectares of Bt cotton in 2002 to 10.6 million hectares in 201 1, represents an unprecedented 212-fold increase in 10 years.
