Abstract

Missionary activities in the modern Turkish history bear a close relation with the facts such as western influence in the region, state of the non-Muslim societies and the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Basic discussions on the background of the missionary activities conducted nearly for two millenniums require archival examination of the referred missionary organizations. This study handles the story of the Urfa Shattuck School for the Blind established by the American Board in Urfa between 1902 and 1914 by touching the correspondences and reports of the aforementioned institution. In this sense, the theoretical ground of the proposed mission institution constructed by the American Board missionaries, activities of the school and its effects on the blind students as well as the place and importance of the school within the missionary activities of the American Board are among the main facts to be investigated.
