This volume is an update to Professor Igor de Rachewiltz's magisterial translation and commentary on the Secret History of the Mongols (SHM). Since its initial publication in 2004, his edition has become both the most widely cited translation, combining modern English readability with accuracy, as well as the "go to" resource for serious researchers for guidance on the enormous multilingual literature on the SHM, be it linguistic, folkloric, historical or literary. With this third volume de Rachewiltz has updated his work to take into account the scholarly findings that have occurred since that time, thus giving scholars another "go to" resource for recent scholarship on the SHM.
The organization of the book follows that of the original edition. The references follow his system of using many title-based acronyms, which may be convenient for practised users but is not immediately intuitive. De Rachewiltz includes a bibliography of works that have appeared since 2004, but since he makes frequent reference to publications that appeared previously, the user will also need to have the original bibliography (in volume 2) handy for reference.
