Abstract

Specific examples of advice that may be misinterpreted include statements such as these: the treatment for mastitis is to "nurse as often as you can on the inflamed side, a well used breast does not get mastitis"; if vaginal bleeding occurs early in pregnancy, then "go to bed and stay there until the bleeding stops"; Thorazine (chlorpromazine) and Haldol (haloperidol) "should not be used in pregnancy"; if you are contracting every five minutes, "the baby cannot possibly be born when the contractions are coming this far apart, so if you are happier at home, stay there"; and finally, women taking the antithyroid medication propylthiouracil "should stop using it four to five weeks before the expected date of delivery."
