No wonder this book is dedicated to Jimmy Carter ("whose message of human rights continues to resonate"). In a departure from his usual practice, which is to assume the garb of the sophisticated, cynical, and hard-nosed pragmatist, this time around Brzezinski dons a preacher's mantle, warning his flock in ringing tones that unless they (we) check our moral compass, all will be lost.
This book is not one of Brzezinski's better efforts. It gives the impression of being assembled easily, the parts being readily available in different places such as previously articulated speeches and previously penned articles. But the thing about the man is that second rate Brzezinski is better than first rate almost anyone else. His knowledge of the geopolitical landscape is so vast, his personal experience in global affairs so extensive, and his intellect so sharp that whenever he opens his mouth or writes...
