Abstract

Paul Mones tells their stories with such clarity and insight that health, social-service, and education professionals will lament the numerous unexploited opportunities for prevention and recoil at the feeble responses of those professionally charged with the protection of children. Six months before Patty killed her mother, the investigating child-protection agency closed the case, stating, "After 18 months our agency felt there had been sufficient progress within the Claremont home and our child protective services case was closed."
