The publishers advise us that this volume is part of "A mad idea: the belief that by the millennium the whole of Scotland can be compressed within 28 vivid, pocket-- sized volumes printing the history and character of each place through the medium of its surviving or demolished architecture". Well, actually they are making a pretty good shot at it. I have previously given a favourable review to the volume on my home county of Ayrshire (RR 93/153) [1] and reviews of other volumes are in the pipeline. The series is now more than half way towards completion and is keeping up a very good standard.
