I first heard of Black Books through Doug "Pathetic Doug" Holland, the author of a wonderful autobiographical zine that chronicles his life as a lowly street vendor in the San Francisco Bay area (Doug now publishes Reader's Guide, a zine devoted to reviewing other zines). Black Books is a small press that has recently distinguished itself by publishing books that even radical publishers would be leery of approaching. In spite of the success of "mainstream" books like Best American Gay Fiction and Best American Lesbian Fiction, and the modest success of Cleis Press's annual Best Gay Erotica and Best Lesbian Erotica series, there still seems to be prejudice among some radical publishers against bisexual books. I find this prejudice to be a bit old fashioned because, as it was once explained to me, "No one is exclusively heterosexual or homosexual, and anyone who thinks s/he is exclusively one or the other is simply self-deluded." Personally, I think humans can only be described as omnisexual beings, since they also derive pleasure from many animate and inanimate things, too.
