Although there are many health and medical encyclopaedias on the market, very few are aimed at non-medical professionals. Of those that do exist, very few are aimed at the UK market. Of those available, Dr Miriam Stoppard wrote a very accessible family health guide (also published by Dorling Kindersley) ([1] Stoppard, 2002) but it concentrates on conditions, and is not as comprehensive as this volume. This work from the British Medical Association and Dorling Kindersley, both respected names in accessible reference publishing, therefore fills an important gap.
Now in its fifth edition, the work describes itself as "the essential reference to over 7,000 medical terms including symptoms, diseases, drugs, and treatments". There is an impressive list of UK qualified medical contributors...
