The content of this work is written at a level to be accessible to most people with an interest in forestry, botany, horticulture, ecology or conservation. CABI's promotional material claims that this work in limited to the 300 most important forest trees (www.cabi.org/bookshop/book/2556). The selection of tree species is global in its scope and does include both major trees as well as many of less significance.
The main body of the work is arranged alphabetically by scientific name; included in entries are common names. Each entry is very consistent in the structure and materials it contains. Within each entry for a species of tree are sets of sub-sections: these include, importance, botanical features, distribution, silvicultural characteristics, silvicultural practice, diseases and pests, uses and further reading.
