Abstract

Our article explores two travel stories less discussed by the significant works of the genre: Calatorie în Rusia by Niphon Popescu and Andrei Tudor's Moscova (Reportaj despre metropola lumii noui). The decision to juxtapose these works is relevant for travel memoirs, a field where the historical context holds a major role, influencing the traveler 's interests, his attitude and manner in conveying impressions. Niphon Popescu visited Russia in 1902 while Andrei Tudor's journey took place in 1946, when the territory was already recognized as USSR. On the one hand, Niphon Popescu, a priest, notices and admires the religious edifices and artifacts of a God-centered world while, on the other hand, Andrei Tudor writes a propagandistic text on a new utopian world populated by the new human prototype - the omnipotent "Soviet man".
