The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently announced that Harold W. Jaffe, MD, a nationally and internationally respected human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) expert, has been named director of the National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHSTP). In his capacity as director, Dr. Jaffe will address a broad range of concerns related to the prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis. A commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service, Dr. Jaffe was promoted to the rank of assistant surgeon general in 1998.
As a result of the growth in the HIV/AIDS epidemic, one of Dr. Jaffe's first steps will be to convene a summit to solicit input from a broad array of community leaders, public health officials, scientists, and other...
