The successor states of the U.S.S.R. in the Caucasian region of Azerbaijan, Moldova, Georgia and Russia found themselves confronting a wave of demands for independence in Nagorno-Karabakh, Transdneister, South Ossetia, Abkazia, Tartarstan and Chechnya. Ethnic, religious and nationalist passions continue to endanger regional security.
Thus, the conflict in Chechnya is a manifestation of long-term instabilities in the Caucasus.
