This book deals with nonmilitary aspects of the Sino-Japanese War and is part of an on-going scholarly reexamination of the Guomindang era. Composed of disparate pieces of research, it lacks focus. Several of the eleven papers repeat work that first appeared in Chinese or Japanese publications and is presented in English for the first time. Given its disparate nature and high price, one cannot recommend its purchase.
Organized into four parts-political and cultural origins of the war; wartime foreign and domestic policies; wartime social and economic problems; and unresolved issues-the eleven papers broaden our knowledge of wartime China.
