Deng Xiaoping's legacy certainly continues to shape China's evolution more than six years after his death (strangely, the author neglects to mention that Deng Xiaoping died in February 1997). This is not a critical biography of Deng Xiaoping, such as that by David S.G. Goodman (Deng Xiaoping and the Chinese Revolution: A Political Biography [New York: Routledge, 1995]), nor is it a comprehensive analysis of his impact on China and its political system. This book is really about Deng Xiaoping's last important political enterprise, the decisive move to a market economy open to foreign trade and investment in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
