In reviewing the ITV production of ? Christmas Carol', it seems more than usually apposite to pay a passing nod of recognition to the other 'Carols' which appeared within the same week on British television screens - and elsewhere. The productions noted above are only the tip of the Dickensian iceberg which surfaces every Christmas as inarguably appropriate seasonal entertainment, and it's the Carol, above in all others Dickens's oeuvre, that so often seems to be the prime and unassailable choice.
Admittedly last year (Christmas 1999) we were given David Copperfield and Oliver Twist, but...
